Starkey Korea CEO Richard Shim will chair the Seoul District Economic Committee (SDEC), a body set up jointly by 25 district chambers of commerce, the Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) said Tuesday.

The committee, founded in December 2003, listens to opinions from small businesses in the capital city and implements various projects to improve market conditions for them. The committee offers consulting, legal, financial and other support to small merchants and independently-run shops.

"With the rapidly changing business environment, I will fulfill my responsibility as the SDEC head by strengthening the competitiveness of small businesses and revitalizing the local economy," Shim said. "To do so, I will place top priority on boosting cooperation with the heads of Seoul's 25 district chambers.

Shim, who has managed the Korean unit of the U.S. hearing aid maker since 1996, has been serving as the head of the SCCI's Seongdong District chamber.
